In the confined space of the space station, the "space gym" is not a simple replica of ground facilities, but a sophisticated health protection system designed to combat the erosion of microgravity on the human body. With scientific training as its core, it builds a health defense line for astronauts to stay in orbit for a long time through special equipment, adaptive design and rigorous processes, and also becomes the technical cornerstone of human exploration of deep space.
The core functions of the space gym are jointly realized by three types of special equipment. Resistance training equipment is a "muscle guardian", such as the "Feitian series core training device" of the Chinese space station, which simulates ground weight through a gas resistance system, supports multi-dimensional movements such as crunches and rotations, and can accurately strengthen the core muscle group and lower limb strength; the "ARED advanced resistance training device" of the international space station uses a vacuum cylinder to provide a maximum resistance of 136 kg to meet the needs of high-intensity training such as squats and deadlifts. Aerobic training equipment is responsible for "cardiopulmonary endurance". The space treadmill fixes the astronauts with elastic straps, simulating running movements while buffering the impact; the space bicycle uses adjustable resistance to allow astronauts to maintain cardiovascular function while pedaling. Auxiliary equipment such as the "Penguin Suit" has built-in elastic cables, allowing astronauts to continue to exercise their muscles during daily activities, forming an "all-weather protection net".

In order to adapt to the special environment of the space station, the design of the space gym is ingenious. In terms of microgravity adaptation, all equipment is fixed to the cabin through high-strength interfaces, and astronauts rely on restraints, foot covers and other devices to stabilize their bodies to ensure effective force. Lightweight and compact are the key to space utilization. For example, the "Feitian Series" adopts a modular folding design, which only occupies 1-2 square meters when unfolded, perfectly adapting to the limited space of the space station. The data-based monitoring system makes training "evidence-based". The equipment can collect physiological indicators such as resistance parameters, number of movements and heart rate in real time. The ground team dynamically adjusts the training plan through data analysis to achieve "precise fitness".
The training of astronauts in the space gym is a rigorous process that has been scientifically verified. During the 1.5-2 hours of training every day, the warm-up session activates muscles through stretching bands and light pedaling; resistance training focuses on the lower limbs and core to prevent muscle atrophy and bone density loss; aerobic training ensures stable cardiopulmonary function; finally, relax the muscles through massage balls and tension bands, and upload data simultaneously for ground evaluation. This regular training can reduce the muscle loss rate caused by microgravity from 15% per month to less than 5%, which is the "health code" for astronauts to perform long-term missions.
As a "health fortress" for human survival in space, the significance of the space gym has long surpassed the simple exercise function. It not only guarantees the health of astronauts on orbit, but also the breakthroughs in low-gravity resistance simulation and lightweight design during its research and development process have fed back the innovation of ground rehabilitation equipment and fitness equipment. With the advancement of deep space exploration missions, future space gyms may incorporate VR technology to allow astronauts to train in simulated ground scenes, and even customize more portable exercise systems for Mars bases. From space stations to deep space, space gyms have always been the core force for humans to protect their own health when exploring the universe.
