The Trump administration recently announced a $1 billion initiative to encourage major U.S. airports to install fitness equipment and various health-supporting facilities. This move will not only reshape the health experience of air travel across the U.S. but also unlock new application scenarios and market opportunities for the global fitness equipment industry. Reportedly, the program is a key component of the Trump administration's $1 trillion infrastructure strategy, focusing on enhancing the health attributes of public facilities and fostering the in-depth integration of "travel + fitness" models.

Details of the plan reveal that the $1 billion investment extends beyond the deployment of single-type fitness equipment, aiming to build a comprehensive airport health ecosystem. Its core components fall into two major categories: first, the development of fitness zones. Lightweight fitness equipment suitable for short, fragmented workouts-including compact treadmills, dumbbell sets, and stretching machines-will be installed at key locations such as airport terminals and transit areas to cater to passengers' exercise needs during waiting times. Second, the enhancement of health-supporting amenities, which will involve upgrading healthy catering options and constructing family-friendly facilities like children's play areas and lactation rooms, fully addressing the health and travel requirements of diverse groups.

Notably, the U.S. government adopted a highly engaging promotional approach to boost the plan's visibility. At a public event, 71-year-old Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and 54-year-old Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy competed in a "pull-up challenge" on stage. Kennedy emerged victorious by completing 20 pull-ups, while Duffy finished 10; Duffy's daughter also joined the challenge and completed 13. This dynamic interaction not only helped the airport health facility plan gain widespread attention but also intuitively communicated the U.S. government's commitment to national health, laying a positive foundation for the adoption of fitness equipment in public spaces.

The plan is currently in the implementation phase. U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy has proactively engaged with CEOs of most major U.S. airlines, urging them to explore collaborative models to ensure the seamless rollout of relevant facilities. Industry analysts note that as one of the world's largest fitness markets, the U.S. fitness industry accounts for roughly one-third of the global sports industry, with mature consumer awareness of fitness. This airport health facility upgrade initiative is expected to further stimulate demand for fitness equipment in public settings.

From an industry perspective, the plan's implementation will bring multiple opportunities to fitness equipment manufacturers. On one hand, airport environments demand higher standards for equipment in terms of portability, safety, and durability, which will drive enterprises to increase investment in R&D and accelerate product iteration. On the other hand, as the Trump administration's infrastructure strategy advances, the coverage of public health facilities will expand, potentially forming an all-scenario fitness network spanning "airports, communities, and office spaces"-unlocking new growth avenues for the fitness equipment industry. Data indicates that U.S. fitness equipment retail sales reached $41 billion in 2025, and this $1 billion investment in airport health facilities is anticipated to trigger a phased surge in procurement demand for related equipment.

This initiative is also part of the Trump administration's broader efforts to comprehensively optimize and upgrade U.S. air travel. Prior initiatives include the reconstruction of Dulles Airport and the modernization of the air traffic control system. Focusing on health facility development will further refine the air travel service chain. For the fitness equipment industry, seizing this policy dividend and accurately meeting the needs of public scenarios like airports will be crucial to enhancing market competitiveness. Moving forward, as local airports release specific implementation plans, relevant market developments merit ongoing attention from industry stakeholders.
